Susanna Wesley And Modeled Godliness

4:09 SPEAKER_00: Susanna Annes Lee Wesley was born in 1669.

4:15 SPEAKER_00: She was a minister's daughter and the youngest of 25 children.

4:20 SPEAKER_00: At age 20, she married Samuel Wesley, a minister in the Church of England.

4:27 SPEAKER_00: The marriage experienced difficulties.

4:30 SPEAKER_00: Samuel was a poor handler of money to such an extent that he even spent time in debtor's prison.

4:40 SPEAKER_00: Twice they lost their home to fire.

4:44 SPEAKER_00: Only half of Susanna and Samuel's 19 children survived to become adults.

4:51 SPEAKER_00: In the process of raising her children, Susanna committed six hours, six days a week to the academic and spiritual education of her children.

5:03 SPEAKER_00: Additionally, Susanna purposely spent one hour a week with each individual child discussing spiritual matters.

5:14 SPEAKER_00: Susanna would also spend an hour every day in solitary prayer and Bible study.

5:21 SPEAKER_00: In 1729, one of Susanna Wesley's sons, Charles, formed a holy club at Oxford.

5:37 SPEAKER_00: This club appears to have been modeled after what John and Charles had observed their mother Susanna Wesley practicing daily.

5:48 SPEAKER_00: The members of this club studied and discussed the Greek New Testament and the classics each evening in a members' room for three hours.

Jochebed’s Courage To Save Moses

7:56 SPEAKER_00: In Exodus 2, the Old Testament provides us with the story of Joachebed, who fought to ensure that her son Moses would not die at the hand of Pharaoh.

8:09 SPEAKER_00: Jochebed was an Israelite who was a slave in Egypt under the reign of Pharaoh.

8:15 SPEAKER_00: The Bible states that the Pharaoh arose who had no memory of how the Israelite Joseph had saved Egypt from famine.

8:25 SPEAKER_00: Instead, this Pharaoh was convinced that the Israelites were a danger to the Egyptians and needed to be constrained.

8:34 SPEAKER_00: This Pharaoh issued a kindly decree that at birth every male child of the Israelites was to be thrown into the river Nile as food for the crocodiles.

8:47 SPEAKER_00: Jochebed defied this order and hid her son for three months after his birth until she could hide him no longer.

8:58 SPEAKER_00: The Egyptians used papyrus plants to make very light and swift boats.

9:04 SPEAKER_00: Joachibed coated one of these papyrus boats with tar and pitch so that no water could seep in.

9:12 SPEAKER_00: The Hebrew word that is translated as papyrus basket in this story is only used one other place in the Bible, and that is to refer to Noah's Ark.

11:03 SPEAKER_00: When Moses' mother came, Pharaoh's daughter offered to pay Jochebed to look after her own child.

11:16 SPEAKER_00: Let us reflect on the truth that as godly parents, we must be prepared to fight for our children's survivors.

Wilma Rudolph And Refusing The Verdict

11:26 SPEAKER_00: Recent history provides us with the legendary tale of Wilma Rudolph, who is known for her feats as a track and field superstar.

11:37 SPEAKER_00: Few, however, know the steps that her mother courageously undertook in order to ensure Wilma's ability to excel at physical sports.

11:50 SPEAKER_00: Wilma Rudolph was born in Clacksville in the Bethlehem area.

11:55 SPEAKER_00: She was the 20th of her father's 22 children from his two marriages.

12:01 SPEAKER_00: Wilma was a premature baby and only weighed 4.5 pounds when she was born on June 23, 1940.

12:10 SPEAKER_00: As a child, Wilma was very sickly.

12:13 SPEAKER_00: She had pneumonia and scarlet fever, and at the age of five, she caught polio.

12:19 SPEAKER_00: This bout with polio left Wilma semi-paralyzed.

12:24 SPEAKER_00: She lost strength in her left leg and foot.

12:28 SPEAKER_00: The doctors in Clarksville told Wilma Rudolph's mother that Wilma would never be able to walk properly.

12:36 SPEAKER_00: Wilma Rudolph's mother didn't accept the doctor's words.

12:41 SPEAKER_00: For two years, on a weekly basis, Wilma's mother took the bus into Nashville with Wilma so that she could receive treatment of that left leg at Mehari Medical College.

12:55 SPEAKER_00: This was a 50-mile journey one-way round trip of 100 miles by bus.

13:02 SPEAKER_00: Additionally, four times a day, Wilma Rudolph received massages from her family at home.

13:10 SPEAKER_00: She also wore an orthopedic shoe to support her left foot for two years.

13:17 SPEAKER_00: Due to these interventions, Wilma was able to overcome the effects of the polio paralysis by the time she was 12 years old.

13:29 SPEAKER_00: Wilma went on to play basketball and run track in high school.

13:34 SPEAKER_00: As a sophomore in high school, Wilma Rudolph scored 803 points in basketball, which was a national USA record at that time.

13:46 SPEAKER_00: When Wilma graduated from high school, she attended Tennessee State University, TSU, and was part of the track and field team.

13:57 SPEAKER_00: While at TSU, Wilma Rudolph first won the AAU 200 meter title in 1959.

14:05 SPEAKER_00: She never lost at that distance during AAU competitions for the next four years.

14:12 SPEAKER_00: At the USA Olympic Trials in 1960, Wilma Rudolph set a record in the 200-meter dash that stood for eight years.

14:24 SPEAKER_00: Wilma represented the USA and won gold medals in the 100 meter, the 200-meter, and the 4x100 meter relay at the 1960 Summer Olympic Games in Rome, Italy.

14:39 SPEAKER_00: Wilma Rudolph became the first ever American woman to win three gold medals in track and field during a single Olympic Games.

14:50 SPEAKER_00: It was at these 1960 Olympic Games that the title of Fastest Woman in the World was conferred on Wilma Rudolph.

15:00 SPEAKER_00: When Wilma Rudolph retired from track and field, she was a world record holder in the 100-meter and 200-meter individual events and the 4x100 meter release.

15:33 SPEAKER_00: One of the most powerful acts a mother can perform is to dedicate her child to God before they even take their first breath.

Hannah’s Vow And Giving Samuel Back

15:43 SPEAKER_00: In 1 Samuel chapters 1 and 2, the Old Testament provides us with the story of Hannah.

15:51 SPEAKER_00: El Cana had two wives, Hannah and Penininah.

15:55 SPEAKER_00: Peninaina had children, but Hannah had none.

15:59 SPEAKER_00: In those days, a woman was considered to be cursed of God if she was barren.

16:05 SPEAKER_00: Year after year, Peninaina took every opportunity to mock and scorn Hannah because she had no children.

16:15 SPEAKER_00: Every year, El Cana would go up to Shiloh where the tabernacle was located to worship and offer sacrifice unto the Lord.

16:25 SPEAKER_00: On one of these expeditions to Shiloh, Hannah was being ridiculed by the other wife to such an extent that she refused to eat and wept greatly.

16:37 SPEAKER_00: After the feasting, Hannah went into the tabernacle to plead with God for her son.

16:44 SPEAKER_00: Hannah promised God that if he gave her a son, she would give the son back to God.

16:51 SPEAKER_00: Hannah went away and God gave her the son that she had prayed for.

16:57 SPEAKER_00: She named him Samuel, and when he was two to three years old, she brought him to the tabernacle to be raised there.

17:07 SPEAKER_00: Scripture records that God continued to be gracious to Hannah.

17:11 SPEAKER_00: Samuel was not her only child.

17:14 SPEAKER_00: She had three sons and two daughters.

17:18 SPEAKER_00: The story of this child, the prophet Samuel, is told in the books of 1st and 2 Samuel.

17:24 SPEAKER_00: 1 Samuel tells the story of the last two judges of Israel, Elijah a failure and Samuel a success.

17:34 SPEAKER_00: 1 Samuel speaks of the first two kings of Israel, Saul a failure and David a success.

17:42 SPEAKER_00: Like the mighty Samson, Samuel was dedicated to the Lord as a child, and so he never cut his hair.

17:50 SPEAKER_00: Samuel is the only spirit that we encounter in the Bible when at Saul's request the witch of Endor conjures him up.

18:00 SPEAKER_00: Samuel is one of only eight people in the Bible who had God call their name twice.

18:08 SPEAKER_00: Before Samuel was even conceived, Hannah committed Samuel to God.

18:14 SPEAKER_00: What is God calling us to dedicate to his service?

Hudson Taylor And A Mother’s Prayer

18:21 SPEAKER_00: Christian history honors Hudson Taylor as the most influential missionary and the most successful missionary to ever visit China.

18:33 SPEAKER_00: When Hudson was just a newborn, his mother Amelia Taylor began praying that God would send her son to China as a missionary.

18:43 SPEAKER_00: Amelia saw great spiritual need in China and longed for God to use her son to meet it.

18:51 SPEAKER_00: In response to this prayer, God called Hudson Taylor to be a missionary to China when he was 17 years old.

19:01 SPEAKER_00: When Hudson left England in 1853 at the age of 21, only a few dozen missionaries had served in China.

19:11 SPEAKER_00: Hudson Taylor went on to serve God in China for more than 50 years from 1853 until his death in 1905.

19:23 SPEAKER_00: Hudson Taylor founded the China Inland Mission CIM in 1865.

19:31 SPEAKER_00: CIM established 20 mission stations, brought almost 1,000 missionaries to China's interior, and trained 700 Chinese workers.

19:44 SPEAKER_00: Hudson's efforts reaped an abundant spiritual harvest, including a strong Chinese church of around 125,000 believers.

19:57 SPEAKER_00: Under Taylor's leadership, the CIM was fully non-denominational and accepted members from all Protestant groups.

20:07 SPEAKER_00: It also welcomed individuals from the working class, single women, and multinational recruits.

20:16 SPEAKER_00: The CIM campaigned vigorously against the opium trade.

20:21 SPEAKER_00: The opium drug was being used by Western countries, mainly the British, to profit off of China.

20:29 SPEAKER_00: It led to huge incidents of addiction among the local Chinese population.

20:36 SPEAKER_00: Historian Ruth Tucker unequivocally states that since the Apostle Paul, no one other than Hudson Taylor, has evangelized such a large geographical area and has had such a wide vision for the souls of others.
